HISTORY & SCIENCES OF THE QUR'AN illustrates thehistorical background of the Qur'an and then explains principles, sources andmethods of interpretation for true understanding of the message of God - theCreator in the Text. In addition to referring to early original Islamicsources, it also compares with discources of Orientalists, wherever necessary,to dispel doubts and skepticism on the Qur'an and its history, generated bythem. It complements other works in the field and is hoped to serve as analternative reference to the works of Orientalists on history and sciences ofthe Qur'an. This book comprises 17 chapters. It begins with a briefbibliographical survey of the Muslim legacy in sciences of the Qur'an, followedby a discussion on its names, vocabulary and language. It discusses thephenomenon of Wahy including its possibility, revelation of the Qur'an and itswisdom, an the Textual purity and authenticity. The classification of the Textinto Makkan and Madinanrevelations, the Textual order, division and names ofthe chpters are analysed. The relevance of asbab al-nuzul, revelation of theQur'an in seven modes, doctrine of Naskh, and Muhkam and Mutashabih passagesare studied with examples for clarity. The literary style of the Qur'an and itsinimitable ellipticism, methodologies of the exegesis, early exegeticaleducation, issues in translation of the Text, and the need for contemporaryunderstanding of the Qur'an are studied and analysed.
