Hypertension is an increasingly worrying public health issue as it is the main risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and premature death worldwide. About one-third of the adults in Malaysia are suffering from hypertension. Although the causes of hypertension are well understood and various treatment modalities have been offered to hypertensive patients, the uptake of these treatment is unsatisfactory. This is mostly due to the lack of knowledge and poor medication adherence. As a result, the rate of hypertensive complications is high in Malaysia and worldwide. To solve the issue, through the content of this book, we provide holistic and easy-to-understand information regarding the disease to all readers. Then, we introduce various self-administered survey tools that can be used to measure the level of medication adherence as well as to identify the underlying factors that affect medication adherence among hypertensive patients. It is hoped that the provision of patient's education and self-monitoring of medication adherence can improve the treatment in hypertension.
